BOULDER ---The University of Colorado’s women’s basketball team took advantage of a solid defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack to chalk up its first conference victory Friday night, 83-55 over Arizona State at Balch Fieldhouse.
The Lady Buffs ran off 10 unanswered points midway through the first half to a 30-14 lead. The Sun Devils managed to pull within 10 points, 34-24, as their offense finally started to click as the first half wound down.
But the fired up CU squad quickly regained a 15-point lead and never was in trouble. ASU was hurt by 12 turnovers, which CU converted into 16 of their 41 first half points.
The Lady Buffs refused to let up in the second half, holding ASU scoreless for two minutes while CU ran up 23 point lead, 55-32. The Lady Buffs continued to pick away at the Sun Devils zone defense, building a 30-point lead that stood until the end of the game.
“We’re beginning to play good ball,” CU coach Jerry Zancanelli explained. “Our offense takes time to get going. We’re still a little rough but we’re getting shots.”
Zancanelli was pleased with the Lady Buffs, both offensively and defensively.
“The whole team, including the bench, played an excellent game, so I’m pleased,” Zancanelli said.
Junior Doni Fischer sparked the Lady Buffs, hitting 14 of her 20 points in the second half. Senior Lynda Gehrke also came alive in the second frame, scoring 12 of her 15 points during CU’s second-half surge.
Sue Horner and Jean Raikes scored 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Lady Buffs, and back-up center Cathy Lanky came off the bench to add nine points.
CU was only allowing ASU one shot at the basket as the Lady Buffs dominated both the offensive and defensive boards, outrebounding the tall Sun Devils, 51-29. Lynda Gehrke led CU with 14 rebounds, while Sue Horner grabbed 10.
Cathy Alken and Cindy Sharpe were the only Sun Devils in double figures with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The victory gives CU a 13-6 record overall, 1-0 in conference play. The Lady Buffs face their second conference test this afternoon, as they take on the scrappy Lumberjills from Northern Arizona following the men’s game at approximately 4:15.
